Looking in from outside the country’s borders, it’s just a bit tough to fathom. Even from a purely transactional perspective of getting some specific action accomplished for one specific group, his supporters have to choose to ignore a lot of other unseemly aspects of him. I know politicians aren’t the most well-regarded bunch, but going with what seems like the literal bottom of the barrel just to get one or another checkbox checked? The emerging consensus among psychologists, political scientists, reporters, et al that I have read is that Trump (fueled and magnified by his enablers and collaborators) have successfully concocted a terrifying (and fabricated) vision of American under the Democrats that resonates with an intractable *base*. The psychologists I have read make much of the power of fear to generate irrational and stubborn resistance to factual information and perceptible flaws (ie, Trump's sociopathy, sexual assaults, criminality, etc). In my mind, Trump is the *culmination* not the *causality*. This overpowering fear is the result 70 years of cultural programming that began with the military-industrial complex's anti-communist polemic that emerged from the ashes of the Second World War and was the foundation for a *make war not love* approach to securing our place in the world.

I can't speak to why people support Trump. There are a few academic studies about fear and submission and similar that may explain some deep-seated psychological reasons why people may prefer a supposed-to-be leader that they perceive as "strong". There are analyses that equivocate about mercenary trade-offs - for instance, evangelical-christians voting for a pussy-grabbing, serial philandering grifter because he promises to appoint anti-abortion supreme court justices. There are presumably more than a few racists who identify with Trump's white-supremacist evident support for "fine people on both sides". And there are greedy fucks who are all-in on rolling-back environmental protections, cutting back on entitlement-spending and cutting taxes for people who ought to be the last in line for government largesse. Possibly there's no answer to why the above categories of voters are the way they are. Instead, I want to focus on the so-called "undecided" voters. Imagine still being undecided after 4 years of Trumponomics! Here, I paraphrase David Sedaris who was poking fun at undecided voters faced with the choice between Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin. Yes - THAT Sarah Palin - shudder . . . Sedaris said: It's like a stewardess is coming down the aisle offering a choice between chicken and a plate of shit that has visible shards of broken-glass in it. Rather than rejecting the shit, the undecided voter wants to know - How is the chicken prepared ? Undecided still - really ? Like Biden said multiple times during both debates: Come on, Man!
