Protest and risk Covid 19

Sadly the cost of protesting may be Covid 19 infection. Hard keep distance in a protest. Getting arrested would be bad as detention centers are hotbeds of infection.

Wear a mask and stay feet apart... if possible.

In what he called a back-of-the-envelope estim Trevor Bedford, an expert the virus at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute, wrote on Twitter that each day of protests could result in about 3,000 new cases and 50 500 deaths. Given the racial disparities seen during the pandemic, he noted, that surge would disproportionately affect black people. “Societal benefit of continued protests must be weighed against substantial potential impacts health,” he wrote.

I fear for my fellow Americans. The latest news the virus is that only about 3% of the Los Angeles population has been infected, so that means the rest of 97% are in danger of infection, assuming you cannot get the problem twice. Immunity is not clear from a one time infection. Also the virus can mutate and there may be no immunity another strain if that occurs. The seasonal flu does come in new flavors each year.

So that could mean we have this threat for years or even decades!

The protestors over George Floyd seem to have forgotten we have a pandemic happening. Most pictures did not show social distancing, people wearing masks and awareness of the danger. The latest CDC numbers show more than 23,000 new cases daily in the U.S. If one percent of those die that is another 2,300 dead in weeks or so.

The news is about 93% of those who die have a pre-existing medical problem, most often high blood pressure. Other popular problems are lung issues, heart issues, and kidney issues. made worse by obesity which strains the body. Air pollution including tear gas makes lung function worse too.

Those over age 60 are higher risk for serious illness. Perhaps 50% of the infected show no symptoms but are still contagious to others. We are just at the first start of this problem.

Sadly, eating, drinking and singing together is a perfect way to transmit the virus to new people. So sensible people will be careful and try not to get infected.

With the current behavior we can expect another 100,000 to 200,000 more dead Americans from Covid 19 by November. If we had been smart like British Columbia, Canada we could have kept the deaths to a much lower number. A terrible shame.

I have not had a haircut in months and wear my shaggy locks proudly...

Recent medical research report is that blood type A positive is 45% greater chance of respiratory failure with Covid 19. The good news is that the Blood type O has a 35% less risk of repiratory failure with Covid 19.

Glad I am blood type O!

Mental Illness

There is a large unmet need for mental health counseling. But I am not a therapist nor do I play one on TV. In my profession as an attorney I meet a number of people who are mentally ill. I do my best to avoid them and refuse to take them on as . I learned this lesson the hard way.

My experience is that you always lose when you try to help someone who is mentally ill. No matter how good a job you do they are not happy with the result and will sue you for not doing better. The mentally ill believe they are right and all others are wrong.

My rule is to refuse to get involved with the mentally ill. Sorry, I cannot help you. You need professional assistance from someone trained to deal with insanity. Not me. Good luck to you, elsewhere. Not me. Bye.

Sadly some people are thieves and selfish. These criminals turn the occasion of a protest into a chance to steal. They do a great harm to the cause that the protestors are fighting.
By using the distraction to cover their wrongs they get a short term advantage, but end in tarnishing the protest. Sadly some minorities hurt the cause of protesting police brutal force and disrespect to minorities. So the thieves are feeding the racist lies that all minorities are dishonest criminals who deserve to be treated as animals.

Gandhi taught non-violent civil disobedience as a way to counter colonial rule in India. Only by the restraint and pure non-violence could the protesters retain the moral high ground. MLK, Jr. preached the same lesson.

Meanwhile Trump as always uses the crisis to drive people apart. Los Angeles showed we do not need the Federal Army to police the streets and enforce the curfew. The police deserve respect, but so do legit protestors of murder by police. Criminals deserve to be imprisoned for theft and vandalism. The criminals who set fire to cars and building risk a murder conviction if anyone is killed as a result of arson. Stupid acts can have very bad consequences. Their are cameras and cell phones recording the criminals as well as the police. There will be consequences for criminal behavior.

Risk factors for Covid 19 death

Age, sex, obesity, and underlying illness have emerged as risk factors for covid-19 death in the UK, according to the largest cohort study to date published in The BMJ May 22, 2020.

The risk of death increases over age 50. Also risk is greater for males, the obese, or having underlying heart, lung, liver and kidney disease.

A team of UK researchers analysed data from 20,300 patients with covid-19 admitted 208 acute care hospitals in England, Wales, and Scotland between 6 February and 19 April 2020. This study covered about a third of patients admitted hospital with covid-19 in the U The average age of patients in the study was 73 years; ,068 men or 60% were admitted hospital and 8,065 women or 40%.

Increasing age, being , and underlying heart, lung, liver and kidney disease were factors known to cause poor outcomes. Researchers found that obesity was a key factor associated with higher risk of death not highlighted in known data from China.

The numbers of dead from Covid 19 keep piling up. The only part that is less grimly horrifying is that the numbers will lead regime change in the U.S. Trump gives himself and A+ grade for the virus management. My grade is F.

As we open the economy more infections and deaths should follow.

I hope for some drugs and a vaccine next year. Too late for many.

By November some of those happy MAGA folks will find out the infection is not a hoax or a joke. It is deadly to about 5% over 60 year olds with health problems. Maybe even enough to shift the result in some tossup states. We shall see.

The CDC says about 90,000 have died from Covid 19 in the U.S. But that is likely an under count. More likely about 110,000 if you add in those extra deaths from lung problems early in 2020 when tests were not available. Many states still do not count deaths at homes and deaths without a diagnostic test.

Currently in mid May 2020 about 1,000 die each day in the U.S. With so many states reopening for business and people thinking the worst is over, virus infection will more easily spread. Thirty days from now the result will be obvious for all to see.

At 1,000 per day killed that is 30,000 per month. With 5.5 months to November 2020 election that is another 165,000 dead, assuming no increase from the reopening. My guess is the number will be twice that figure.

Trump is trying to duck responsibility for the fight to beat the virus. But the buck stops with the President, as Truman said. He wants the glory, he gets the blame.

If you think Trump did a great job fighting the virus, then vote for him in November. If you think Trump was inept and failed as a leader, replace him and try Biden for a change.

Stupid is great until people start dying without need to do so.

The virus is irritating. But we have learned a lot in a short period of time.

For 80% of us the virus is mild or no big deal. 50% have no symptoms but still spread it.

Still for 5% the virus may kill you. Usually it takes 30 or more days to kill someone, but some people die more quickly.

The 1918 to 1919 flu killed between 50 and 100 million worldwide. This one could too.

There are hopeful developments. Drugs are being tested and steps are being taken to improve the odds to beat the virus in hospitals.

Still the fastest vaccine developed to fight a virus is four years, and then getting people vaccinated takes a year or more. HIV-AIDS killed in the eighties, and there is no vaccine yet.

More than 90% of those who die from the virus are males, over age 60, and have major medical issues like high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes.

The research has shown your own body can kill you from a storm of reaction from the virus, so they use Drugs to tame down the inflamed reaction.

Delay getting sick and you have a better chance of surviving this epidemic.

Stay home if you can, stay healthy and survive... Good luck to all. We will need it.

Reopen to what?

Science and health advice from doctors and public health experts. Trump rejects that.

The CDC muzzled. The U.S. with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths from the virus. We have failed to do a good job due to inept leaders.

California got lucky with Gov. Newsome stepping up in March 2020. But not enough was done in January, February and early March.

The reopening is foolish as no state meets the criteria for reopening.

If you can stay home, work from home and limit your contacts with strangers.

Wear a mask to protect yourself and others.

Drugs are being tested, and vaccines are being tested.

About 5% were infected in Los Angeles; about 20% were in NYC.

More is learned every day. Better to get infected later.

Stay safe and stay alive.

Ain't misbehaving, due the virus situation.

Some hopeful signs: The stock market is rebounding. Some trials of approved drugs may find a winner to re-purpose. The curves are flattening. So hospitals are not over whelmed.

American ingenuity is helping to save lives.

Germany is doing a better job with only a 3% death rate compared to confirmed cases. Italy has a 13% rate and the U.S. a 5.2% rate, with CA at 3.6% and NY at 7.4%.

Of course the numbers are inaccurate. Under-counts and over-counts.

Not a good time to be in a nursing home.

Social anxiety

Lots of people suffer from social anxiety. It is normal to feel nervous about meeting new people. But some take it further. One thing getting older helps is the realization that other people often are too busy worrying about themselves to spend too much energy judging me... I learned to stop worrying too much about my appearance when I found out others are busy worrying about their appearance...

So tell yourself you look fine and lovely. It may even be that you do. Of course if you are wearing protective gear and a mask it does not matter too much what you look like without protection...
