Trump vs. Nixon I compare Trump and Nixon for a thought experiment. Times change and attitudes change so it is not entirely fair. Despite some loosening of what was acceptable, the seventies were some what inhibited compared to the Wild West of the internet and porn now. Nixon was a criminal. I think he knew of the dirty tricks and burglary of the DNC in advance. Nixon authorized the coverup, money to the plumbers and erasing the tape that showed he was complicit. He was a paranoid racist and closet anti-semite. Nixon was a control freak so the claim that he did not know what was happening in his campaign in 1972 is not believable. Nixon picked the logo and style of his campaign buttons and bumper stickers. Nixon lied about a secret plan to win the Vietnam war and interfered in LBJ trying to make peace in 1968. But Nixon did not normalize White Supremacy, Neo-Nazis or demonize immigrants. Nixon hated the free press, but did not demonize journalists and deride as fake news actual facts. Nixon did not conspire with Russia and China to win elections by campaign finance violations. Nixon did not seek business deals with Russia while claiming he had no deals or assets with Russia. Nixon did not help Russian mafia money launder. Nixon did not shut down the Federal government to win policy positions such as a border wall. Nixon did have slush funds, but not from foreign countries seeking favors or blackmail. Trump is happily destroying the environment for coal and fossil fuels and mining. Nixon signed the Clean Air act and started the EPA! Trump kills Mercury regs, pulls the US out of the Paris Climate accord and calls Global Warming a hoax! Nixon had competent cabinet heads and conservative but some decent judges. Trump has corrupt and incompetent cabinet and massive turnover and vacancies. They both attempted to interfere with FBI investigations, but Trump was more ineffective. Trump is more chaotic, more ridiculous liar, and a bigger bragger claims credit for other's efforts and successes. Trump gave bigger tax cuts for the rich and corporations than Nixon. Trump was accused by more women of sexual assaults than Nixon. Trump has pandered to his base more than Nixon. Trump cares nothing for NATO, the WTO or free trade and the US relations with Canada, Mexico and Europe. Historians and political scientists rated Trump the worst and most divisive president in US history, which goes back to 1789. Nixon had the decency to resign when caught. Trump seems unlikely to have the shame to feel the need to quit. Trump seems clearly worse than Nixon. |

We survived Nixon and will survive Trump. Just got to make sure he leaves in 2020 after losing the election.
