"...a 20-something guy..."
Ha Ha! Say no more!
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind, to quote a former 20-something guy who no doubt would have a better answer than me if he would just read your blog once in a while.

As to the young man who IMed you 6 times, BLOCK works well. It's one of the few functions on Fuck Mates that works. I only IM someone once maybe twice. Because IM works so poorly if I do not get an answer I will drop them an email. I just let them know I am interested and tried IM and that if they are not interested just delete the email and I will not bother them.

once is a hello
twice is rude
thrice invades my space
the fourth time is a nuisance
that does not get better with time

there is a world of difference between insanity and stupidity

If I try to contact someone on IM, I just send once, and if I don't receive a reply in 10 minutes delete.

I wonder if you check the keep me logged in button the system thinks you are available for IM. I believe it keeps you logged in if you close the tab without expressly logging out.

The perversity of the universe is unbounded.

Er um I'm fairly certain plenty of guys here " have nothing better to do than you "because they've never had the pleasure of your company.

Sarry, my "respond" button doesn't respond.

What the hell am I paying this place for?
Has Fuck Mates become the online equivalent of a junky used car joint?

Anyway, you asked where have I been?
Why, on acreage with livestock, one of which is a 97 year old ambulatory bipedal homonid.
I'm still researching that breed so it's been taking up a chunk of my time.

I miss you too.

He's going to walk out the door on the morning of his 106th birthday and chop down a tree so he can whittle up some toothpicks.
All I need to do is make sure it doesn't hit the house first.

Quoting SweetCirce :
"With this (relatively) new feature of being able to IM someone directly from their profile, regardless of whether he/she has actually opened the IM tab, it seems impossible to stop these pages."

I swear by the block button.
BUT....
It's not enough to block them from the IM panel, as it doesn't really work. As you point out, they can still IM you from your profile or from the site's home page, if your profile happens to be displaying in the "who's online" etc. listings.
I have to go to > Privacy Preferences > Blocked Member List and enter their username there, selecting "View My Profile" so that they will be totally banned from veiwing or contacting me.
I know, it's a bit too much to totally ban them but I've not found any other way that will effectively prevent the incoming IM requests.
